Beyond the Silence

Beyond the Silence by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

Purchase a copy: http://bit.ly/1PtlZWv

Lillian Porter has always wanted to fulfill her mother’s dream of going west, so when she hears about a nanny position in Angels Camp, California, she defies her grandfather and takes a chance on a new future. But she quickly wonders if she made the right choice. Murky rumors swirl around Woodward Colton, her new employer, but the gossip doesn’t match the man Lillian comes to know.

Still, something dark did happen in the family’s past. Lillian’s seven-year-old charge hasn’t spoken in over a year. Gently, Lillian tries to coax him out of his shell, hoping he’ll one day feel safe enough to share what scared him. But the Colton olive farm is no longer a safe place. Lillian encounters suspicious characters on their land and mysterious damage done to the farm. When the housekeeper is brutally attacked, the town once again suspects the worst. Will discovering the truth help Lillian clear the name of the man she has come to love—or will it endanger her even more?

My thoughts:

“God had brought her to this olive farm for a purpose. And she would do everything in her power to fulfill it.”

Beyond the Silence is a captivating story! Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse have shared a wonderful collaboration, and their love of and attention to historical detail shines throughout the novel!

The characterization is excellent, and several characters captured my heart, especially six-year-old Jimmy. My heart ached for him and his family, and I was delighted when Lillian Porter arrived and helped heal their grief and pain. Brimming with drama and intrigue, the plot of Beyond the Silence is gripping and its spiritual messages are inspiring. I loved this riveting tale and highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction!

Tessa Taylor arrives in 1870s Upper Peninsula, Michigan, planning to serve as a new teacher to the town. Much to her dismay, however, she immediately learns that there was a mistake, that the town had requested a male teacher. Percival Updegraff, superintendent and chief mine clerk, says she can stay through winter since they won’t be able to locate a new teacher before then, and Tessa can’t help but say she is in his debt. Little does she know that Percival will indeed keep track of all that she owes him.

Determined to become indispensable, Tessa throws herself into teaching, and soon the children of the widowed lighthouse keeper have decided she’s the right match for their grieving father. Their uncle and assistant light keeper, Alex Bjorklund, has his own feelings for Tessa. As the two brothers begin competing for her hand, Tessa increasingly feels that someone is tracking her every move, and she may not be able to escape the trap that has been laid for her.

Quote- Undaunted Hope

My thoughts:

Undaunted Hope is another captivating story in the Beacons of Hope series! Superb characterization and attention to detail are hallmarks of Jody Hedlund’s writing as she brings to life another compelling tale of history and romance. Since reading Book 2, Hearts Made Whole, I have been anticipating Tessa’s story.

Burdened by the mistakes of her past, Tessa Taylor arrives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula eager to make a fresh start. Her journey is filled with unexpected events, and she soon finds herself in situations she never imagined. “In a town mired in darkness, she may shine the light they need.”

I loved the historical details, spiritual themes, and tender romance of this story! Beautifully written, Undaunted Hope is a book you don’t want to miss! I highly recommend it, as well as the other novels in the Beacons of Hope series. While each story stands alone, there is a special thread that runs through the series and is such a beautiful part of each story.

Mallory’s mother died fifteen years ago. But her father’s last words on the phone were unmistakable: “Find . . . mother.”

Shame and confusion have kept Mallory Davis from her home for the last fifteen years, but when her dad mysteriously dies on his mail boat route, she doesn’t have any choice but to go back to Mermaid Point.

Mallory believes her father was murdered and childhood sweetheart Kevin O’Connor, game warden in Downeast Maine, confirms her suspicions. But Kevin is wary of helping Mallory in her search. She broke his heart—and left—without a word, years ago.

When Mallory begins receiving threats on her own life—and her beloved teenage daughter, Haylie—their search intensifies. There’s a tangled web within the supposed murder, and it involves much more than what meets the eye.

As answers begin to fall into place, Mallory realizes her search is about more than finding her father’s killer—it is also about finding herself again . . . and possibly about healing what was broken so long ago with Kevin. She just has to stay alive long enough to put all the pieces together.

My thoughts:

Mermaid Moon is a complex, intriguing tale!

Colleen Coble pulled me into the story with her vivid details and descriptions and kept me guessing with the myriad of unexpected twists and turns. The mounting danger and suspense added a sense of urgency to the story line, which I really enjoyed. Mallory and Kevin’s rekindled romance was another element of the story that I enjoyed, and I loved catching up with Claire and Luke from Book 1, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge.

Mermaid Moon is a great blend of mystery and romance, and I look forward to continuing the Sunset Cove series!

Maddie O’Rourke’s orphaned half brother and half sister have arrived safely in Seattle—with a man they hope she’ll wed! Though Michael Haggerty’s not the escort she planned for, Maddie allows him to work off his passage by assisting in her bakery…and helping care for her siblings. But she’ll never risk her newfound independence by marrying the strapping Irishman—or anyone else.

In New York, Michael ran afoul of a notorious gang. Traveling west was a necessity, not a choice. The longshoreman grew fond of his young charges, and now he’s quickly becoming partial to their beautiful sister, too. So when danger follows him, threatening Maddie and the children, he’ll do anything to protect them—and the future he hopes to build.

My thoughts:

Instant Frontier Family is an engaging story and a wonderful addition to the Frontier Bachelors series!

Regina Scott always paints a vivid picture with her words, and I loved the details and descriptions she included in this story. I could just hear the Irish brogue as I read! I especially enjoyed the development of the relationships between Maddie and her siblings and between Maddie and Michael. Their story is fraught with drama and danger, and I enjoyed every word!

Regina Scott

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she’d learned a bit more about writing. After numerous short stories and articles in magazines and trade journals, and a good kick in the backside from her husband, she got serious about writing. Since then, she’s had published more than two dozen clean historical romances for adults and young adults. Her traditional romances have earned praised from reviewers and readers alike. Booklist calls her work “quietly compelling” and “impeccably written.” Huntress Reviews says, “Regina Scott delivers,” and “I will always buy a book with Regina Scott’s name on it.”

Tough As They Come

Tough As They Come by Travis Mills
Click here to purchase a copy or learn more about Tough As They Come.

Thousands have been wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Five have survived quadruple amputee injuries. This is one soldier’s story.

Thousands of soldiers die year to defend their country. United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills was sure that he would become another statistic when, during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, he was caught in an IED blast four days before his twenty-fifth birthday. Against the odds, he lived, but at a severe cost—Travis became one of only five soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to survive a quadruple amputation.

Suddenly forced to reconcile with the fact that he no longer had arms or legs, Travis was faced with a future drastically different from the one he had imagined for himself. He would never again be able to lead his squad, stroke his fingers against his wife’s cheek, or pick up his infant daughter.

Travis struggled through the painful and anxious days of rehabilitation so that he could regain the strength to live his life to the fullest. With enormous willpower and endurance, the unconditional love of his family, and a generous amount of faith, Travis shocked everyone with his remarkable recovery. Even without limbs, he still swims, dances with his wife, rides mountain bikes, and drives his daughter to school.

Travis inspires thousands every day with his remarkable journey. He doesn’t want to be thought of as wounded. “I’m just a man with scars,” he says, “living life to the fullest and best I know how.”

My thoughts:

“You have to make the best of it. You have to keep going. You’ve got to be as tough as they come.”

Tough As They Come is an inspiring true story, one that will challenge and motivate all who are facing adversity! “It’s amazing what you can accomplish once you make the all important decision to go forward.”

I appreciated Travis’s candor and honesty as he recounts his life before and after the IED explosion that forever changed his world. “Against the odds, he lived, but at a severe cost – Travis become one of only five soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to survive a quadruple amputation.”

Travis shares his thoughts and actions throughout the book, and he also shares those of his family and friends. I was moved not only by Travis’s words, but also by the journal entries from his wife Kelsey that detail the emotional turmoil their family endured.

Travis says, “My main message is one that many people can relate to. Hard times come to everybody. When hard times happen, we have a choice to make. We can become discouraged and bitter, or we can choose to never quit. When life gets hard, the key is just to keep pushing forward. Instead of saying “It could be worse,” the key is to say, “It’s going to get better.” Then work with all your might toward that goal.”

Travis Mills’ memoir is a remarkable story and one that will encourage all who read Tough As They Come!

At Love's Bidding

At Love’s Bidding by Regina Jennings

Purchase a copy: http://bit.ly/1QJGxOK

She sells priceless antiques. He sells livestock by the pound. Is he really the man to make a bid for her heart?

After helping her grandfather at their Boston auction house, Miranda Wimplegate discovers she’s accidentally sold a powerful family’s prized portrait to an anonymous bidder. Desperate to appease the people who could ruin them forever, they track it to the Missouri Ozarks and make an outlandish offer to buy the local auction house and all its holdings before the painting can move again.

Upon crossing the country, however, Miranda and her grandfather discover their new auction house doesn’t deal in fine antiques, but in livestock. And its frustratingly handsome manager, Wyatt Ballentine, is annoyed to discover his fussy new bosses don’t know a thing about the business he’s single-handedly kept afloat. Faced with more heads of cattle than they can count—but no mysterious painting—Miranda and Wyatt form an unlikely but charged partnership to try and prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

My thoughts:

At Love’s Bidding is a cleverly crafted historical romance! Book 2 in the Ozark Mountain Romance series, this novel reads as a stand-alone story. However, those who have read A Most Inconvenient Marriage will enjoy revisiting some beloved characters.

I delighted in Miranda Wimplegate and Wyatt Ballentine and their auction house adventures! The thread of mystery that brings these two characters together adds an interesting element to the story line and to the romance that develops. While Miranda and Wyatt’s story is filled with humor, it also shares some poignant moments as well.

At Love’s Bidding boasts its own unique charm, as only Regina Jennings can create. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to more!

Whispers in the Reading Room

Whispers in the Reading Room by Shelley Gray

Purchase a copy: http://bit.ly/1lujxr6

Lydia’s job at the library is her world—until a mysterious patron catches her eye . . . and perhaps her heart.

Just months after the closure of the Chicago World’s Fair, librarian Lydia Bancroft finds herself fascinated by a mysterious dark-haired and dark-eyed patron. He has never given her his name; he actually never speaks to a single person. All she knows about him is that he loves books as much as she does.

Only when he rescues her in the lobby of the Hartman Hotel does she discover that his name is Sebastian Marks. She also discovers that he lives at the top of the prestigious hotel and that most everyone in Chicago is intrigued by him.

Lydia and Sebastian form a fragile friendship, but when she discovers that Mr. Marks isn’t merely a very wealthy gentleman, but also the proprietor of an infamous saloon and gambling club, she is shocked.

Lydia insists on visiting the club one fateful night and suddenly is a suspect to a murder. She must determine who she can trust, who is innocent, and if Sebastian Marks-the man so many people fear-is actually everything her heart believes him to be.

My thoughts:

Whispers in the Reading Room is an enchanting tale of mystery and romance! Shelley Gray captured my attention on the very first page and held it steadfast until the end. The following passage opens the story and describes how I feel about this novel.

“She still remembered the expression on his face last week when he’d finished and closed the last tome. He’d looked pleased and just a bit melancholy. She knew those dual feelings well – the satisfaction of completing a well-written piece of literature while also coming to terms with the fact that those few moments of pure bliss would soon be replaced with a longing for more.”

Gray’s characterization is excellent and one of the things I love most about this novel! Lydia Bancroft and Sebastian Marks are unique, complex characters; each struggling to discover who they really are and where they belong. Their contrasting personas make for a captivating story, one that carefully and cleverly unfolds with each turn of the page.

I loved Whispers in the Reading Room! I have been remiss in not reading the first two books in this series, but that is an oversight I will soon remedy.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.

In a time when the traditional ways of medicine are constantly being questioned by new doctors fresh from medical school, midwife Martha Cade tries to balance her life’s calling with the demands of her family. Recently reunited with her estranged seventeen-year-old daughter, Martha finds herself torn between guiding her child and allowing her to be an adult. At the same time, she must decide whether she’ll risk reopening the heart she’d long closed off to love.

Though a small town, Trinity, Pennsylvania, is fraught with secrets, and as a midwife, Martha moves among its people. She knows which homes are filled with light and love, which families have slipped into grief, which wives are unhappy, and which husbands dare to cross lines…As Martha struggles with the conflicts of being a mother, a midwife, and a woman, she learns the greatest lessons of all–that hope can shine even in the darkest hours, and that faith has a way of making the impossible possible.

My thoughts:

The Midwife’s Choice is a wonderful story! Once again, Delia Parr brings Trinity, Pennsylvania, and its residents to life in a captivating tale of faith, family, and friendship.

I love Martha Cade and her work as the community midwife! In this second book of the At Home in Trinity series, Martha is confronted with events that cause her to struggle with the decisions she has made and the life she has chosen. Each twist and turn of the plot drew me deeper into the story, and I reveled in its drama, emotion, and romance.

There are beautiful spiritual threads woven through the story and numerous words of wisdom shared. I made note of several meaningful quotes and passages throughout the book, and the following encapsulates one of the many lessons Martha learns.

“It’s natural for things to change. Even the land changes over time. So do people. They come into our lives and sometimes, sadly, they leave far too soon. But our memories–of our loved ones and our lives together–are ours to keep. Sometimes they fade a bit and we lose little details, or we might even forget whole incidents. Until something prompts us to remember. But the goodness, the warmth, the love our memories contain–that’s what will always stay in our hearts so we can carry our memories wherever we go. And there’s always room to add more.”

I thoroughly enjoyed The Midwife’s Choice and can’t wait to revisit these beloved characters again in The Midwife’s Dilemma!

COLORADO 1880

Jem Wheeler has always been a survivor. He just wants to make a fresh start in Colorado Springs after the loss of his wife. But then he happens upon a young mute woman being sold off to the highest bidder. He wasn’t looking for a mail-order bride. He wasn’t looking to rescue anyone either. But desperate circumstances can drive a good man to do things he hadn’t planned on doing…

When Jem steps into Annie’s life, she’s not expecting anyone to save her. Mute from birth, she’s just using all her wits to survive. All she’s ever really wanted is a family of her own. For someone to see her. To look at her long enough to hear the things she can’t say.

Can a rescued bride who can’t speak communicate her love for a grieving widower and his little girl? Will her love ever be returned?

My thoughts:

The Brides Series is one I have enjoyed since reading the first book, The Unexpected Bride.  Although each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone novel, reading them in order will provide a more complete reading experience.

The Bartered Bride is a compelling story! Lena Goldfinch does a wonderful job crafting characters readers will care about, and my heart ached for several in this story. Jem and Annie’s story is rife with drama and danger, but it is also a tender tale of romance.

I delighted in the unique characters, historical details, and engaging plot of this well-told story. I really enjoyed The Bartered Bride and recommend it to fans of historical romance!
