The action starts in the first chapter and doesn’t stop until the very end. Shay Ridiker is an airplane mechanic who has been dispatched to Alaska, along with pilot Rick Savage. These two co-workers are expecting a routine repair and repo, but soon find themselves running for their lives. Shay and Rick struggle to survive in the wilderness and escape the madmen who hold them captive.

Shay and Rick are both troubled by past experiences and reluctant to share their vulnerabilities. However, they must learn to trust each other in order to survive. Will their open hearts lead to love?

Loves-Refuge

Love’s Refuge by Sandra Leesmith

Synopsis:

Skye Larsen loves her peaceful life on Leeza Island in Puget Sound – the tranquility, the friendly neighbors, and especially the safety from big-city dangers. So when cruel pranks start to escalate and changes threaten to overtake the island, Skye is determined to fight for her haven. The presence of a handsome vacationer and the unexpected feelings he awakens can’t distract her from her goal.

Danny Fraser doesn’t realize how desperately he needs a rest until he meets Skye. By allowing him to glimpse her simple way of life, she helps him reorient his priorities – and steals his heart in the process. But his work and home in Seattle keep Skye at bay.

An isolated island girl with painful memories. A dedicated city boy with a wild past. What will it cost for them both to find a refuge from their storms?

Thoughts:

Love’s Refuge is a tender love story set against the beautiful backdrop of a remote island in Puget Sound.  Vivid imagery makes the sights and sounds of Leeza Island come alive!

Skye Larsen and Danny Fraser are relatable characters, each with issues they are struggling with.  Skye enjoys her quiet life and doesn’t want anything or anyone to disturb the tranquility of her home.  Danny is very committed to the work he does, but is carrying the burden of situations beyond his control.

As destructive incidents begin to occur and romance begins to bloom, Skye and Danny provide refuge for each other.  With God’s help, they both find solace and healing.  The spiritual themes of faith and love are gently woven into this story as a reminder that God offers the perfect refuge.

I enjoyed meeting Skye and Danny and the other residents of Leeza Island and would love to visit again!  Full of mystery and romance, Love’s Refuge is a great escape.

A Heart Deceived

A Heart Deceived by Michelle Griep

Synopsis:

Miri Brayden teeters on a razor’s edge between placating and enraging her brother, whom she depends upon for support. Yet if his anger is unleashed, so is his madness. Miri must keep his descent into lunacy a secret, or he’ll be committed to an asylum-and she’ll be sent to the poorhouse. Ethan Goodwin has been on the run all of his life-from family, from the law … from God. After a heart-changing encounter with the gritty Reverend John Newton, Ethan would like nothing more than to become a man of integrity-an impossible feat for an opium addict charged with murder. When Ethan shows up on Miri’s doorstep, her balancing act falls to pieces. Both Ethan and Miri are caught in a web of lies and deceit-fallacies that land Ethan in prison and Miri in the asylum with her brother. Only the truth will set them free.

Thoughts:

While I do not normally read books with a dark or disturbing storyline, I am certainly glad I read A Heart Deceived.  I found this to be an extremely well-written novel!  Michelle Griep has written a unique story full of interesting characters, descriptive language and historic details.  This is not a light, easy read, but rather a deeper story that illustrates the darker side of humanity.  The spiritual themes of faith, hope and forgiveness were wonderfully conveyed and present throughout.  This was my first time to read Michelle Griep’s writing and I certainly look forward to reading more!

Today only, you can order your copy of A Heart Deceived, eBook, for only $0.79 from Christianbook.com.

Haunting Joy

Haunting Joy

Haunting Joy by Lena Goldfinch

Halloween may be over, but it’s never too late for a little ghost story!   Haunting Joy is currently available for $0.99 as a Kindle download.  While I don’t normally read paranormal stories, I had heard great things about this one and am glad I gave it a try!

Synopsis:

“I never believed in ghosts. Until it happened to me.”

Joy’s new dress has a secret – one with a little supernatural history, one that’s a little more than she expected.

It all starts one ordinary afternoon, as seventeen-year-old Joy tries on some thrift-store clothes her grandmother gave her. The little white dress fits perfectly. Trouble is, now it won’t leave her alone. Soon Joy is swept up in an extraordinary journey to help a ghost complete some unfinished business.

If only that didn’t involve Joy driving through dangerous intersections…

Or calling up her high-school crush, Nick…

Or getting stuck at a cemetery after dark.

Will Joy accept this ghostly challenge to be “more”? And just how far will she go to uncover the truth?

Thoughts:

Having never read paranormal fiction, I wasn’t sure whether or not I would enjoy Haunting Joy.  However, I had been hearing buzz about this book and was very intrigued by the premise.

On Halloween morning, I participated in a Twitter chat with Lena Goldfinch and enjoyed finding out more about her and Haunting Joy.  This is what Lena had to say about her inspiration for this story.

“One morning I woke up to the sound of a (human-sounding) sigh in the corner of my room.  I thought it was my dog, but the dog was nowhere near the sound.  However, a box of thrift store & yard sale finds from my mom was!  Thus the story for Haunting Joy was born—a haunted thrift store dress.

Haunting Joy is an enchanting story of a young girl, a haunted thrift store dress, and a journey of discovery.  Joy is immediately drawn to a white dress she finds in a sack of thrift stores finds given to her by her grandmother.  Intrigued by the connection she feels to the dress, she sets out to find out more about the previous owner.  Not only does Joy find out more about the dress and its owner, she also makes some interesting discoveries about herself.

I enjoyed this YA Light Paranormal story and look forward to reading the next book in this series!

Haunting Joy series:

Book 1- Haunting Joy

Book 2- Haunting Melody, releasing in 2014

Biography:

Lena lives in a scenic small town in Massachusetts with her husband, two kids, and a very spoiled Black Lab.  She employs both her computer and artistic skills designing her website and also book interiors & covers.  She writes fiction for young adults, mostly light fantasy/paranormal with a healthy dose of “sigh-worthy” romance.  You can visit her at: http://www.lenagoldfinch.com
